Being a dad isn’t easy. And it’s certainly not something that any man is immediately prepared for. Being a dad is complicated and it’s something that requires a certain amount of trial and error. Dads learn through doing.

While a single article couldn’t hope to encompass the complexities of being a great dad, here are seven tips that cover some of the most important aspects.

Spend More Time With Your Children

One of the most common mistakes that fathers make is failing to spend enough time with their children. Many parents worry about the amount of quality time that they are spending with their children such as taking them to the park, but in reality, any time you spend with your child is quality time. Simply being at home most evenings is enough. Unfortunately, for many fathers, this does mean certain sacrifices need to be made.

Talk More

Don’t be the type of father that only talks to their children when they’ve done something wrong. As a father, you are supposed to be more than just an authority figure. You should do your best to build a strong, communicative relationship with your children when they are young. With time, building such a relationship tends to get harder, not easier.

Be a Good Role Model

An often forgotten aspect of parenting is the need to be a good role model. Whether you realize it or not, you are a role model to your children. When a girl has a loving father, she grows up knowing that she deserves to be respected by men. Boys on the other hand, look to their father for an example of the type of man that they should become.

Discipline with Care

Another important part of being a good father is being an appropriate authority figure. Finding the right balance in this regard is something that many fathers find challenging. Try to discipline your children in a calm and appropriate fashion. In doing so, you will be able to provide them with the structure and limits that they need while still demonstrating that you love them.

Eat With Your Family

These days, many families don’t eat together on a daily basis and it’s a shame, because the benefits of doing so have been proven time and time again. You don’t need to share an evening meal, breakfast or lunch can be just as beneficial. Eating together gives your children a chance to communicate with you. It also provides the perfect forum for you to give them advice.

Show More Affection

Finally, an aspect of parenting that some fathers have difficulty with is showing affection. The occasional hug is the easiest way to let your children know that you love and care about them. It’s important for you to be both comfortable and willing to do so. Despite what many fathers think, hugs are not “their mothers job”.

Respect Your Partner

An important part of being a good father to a child is simply respecting their mother. By demonstrating that you respect a child’s mother, you are providing a safe and secure environment for your child to grow up in. Regardless of whether or not you are married, work hard to keep the relationship healthy. When children see their parents respecting each other, they are more likely to feel respected themselves.
